Calculating energy savings is easy, right?
Simply subtract the energy cost from the year after installation from the energy cost of the year previous to installation!
This is true for an individual property. But we have data for a building that houses 248 bedrooms and has saved upwards of £70K on the previous year’s energy bill.
For us to use this as an example would be misleading. We know that originally the building was fitted with storage heaters, the control was limited and in most cases the heating was switched on for most of the time. Any control would have seen impressive savings in this instance!
We must promote figures that are potentially achievable for any organisation which is considering a Prefect Controls product, but, with the proviso that there are many considerations to take into account that will affect the final energy saving figure;
• What was the original heating source?
• What was the previous heating control?
• Has the building’s infrastructure been changed with regard to insulation or room configuration?
• Is water heating part of the calculation?
• How many heating seasons have been included?
• What is the geographical location of the property?
• What are the time, comfort and boost temperature parameters?
The list of contributing factors is long and specific to each installation.
For the purposes of demonstrating the savings that have been made by using our products, we use average figures from as many installations that we have access to data from.
It is indisputable that Irus saves energy.
Evidence from our installations proves this.
It is understandable though, that our clients consider the data they provide to be of a commercially sensitive nature and therefore do not wish for it to be in the public domain.
Therefore, we have taken data and, with permission from a number of organisations, we have made it anonymous. All information is accurate as supplied to us.
This information below shows a variety of sites with differing numbers of bedrooms. From this we can determine and average saving per room over a 12 month period.
Average saving per room/per year using data from 7 sites of varying size, location and a variety of existing control systems
We estimate an average cost of installation per room to be £250. Therefore, an average saving of £89.74 would suggest an average ROI of under 3 years.
Comparative energy savings between existing controls and Irus
The following graph displays the data from two accommodation blocks, similar in size and structure, both having 6 flats containing 7 rooms each.
Block 6 had an existing basic control system with panel heaters, while Block 7 is fitted with Irus.
Comparative energy savings between existing controls, ecostat and Irus
The graph below shows data from a site for which we had the opportunity to compare 3 accommodation blocks that were very similar in structure and size.
The first block had very basic heating controls on ordinary panel heaters – essentially an on/off switch.
Block 2 had local control; our ecostat intelligent thermostat controlling ordinary panel heaters. We estimate a further 5%-10% savings would have been made if the ecostat model chosen used PIR presence/absence detection and Window-Open technology.
Block 3 was fitted with Irus central control for heating only. We would expect to see even greater savings if water heating was also under Irus control and TRIAD warnings were observed.
